Writing Rubric

RUBRIC FOR GRADING GUILFORD HIGH SCHOOL WRITING

Teachers’ may need to alter rubrics based on length of assignment.  Categories may be weighed based on the type of assignment and/or content area.

Grading Scale:   90-100% A,  80-89% B,  70-79% C,  60-69% D,  below 60% F.

Most of the paper achieves the assigned task.

Most details support the subject and the main idea.

27-25 Points

 
Reader can understand some of what the writer is trying to communicate.

Most of the paper achieves the assigned task.

Details are somewhat sketchy.  The evidence somewhat supports the main idea.

 

24-21 Points

 
Reader can understand little of what the writer is trying to communicate.

Little of the paper achieves the assigned task.

Unable to find details.

Details are lacking or incorrect.  The evidence is lacking.

Most of the time topic sentences are interesting and relevant to the paragraph.

Most of the time transitions are clear and smooth.
Generally written in a logical order.

Most of the conclusion is satisfying.

 

27-25 Points

A few topic sentences are interesting and relevant.

 
Transitions are inadequate.
 

More than half of the assignment is in a logical order.

The conclusion may need additional development.

24-21 Points

Topic sentences do not relate to the paragraph and/or are absent.
 

Transitions are needed.
 

Does not progress in logical order.

 
The conclusion is abrupt and limited.

Grammar, spelling, word usage, punctuation and capitalization have a few errors.

23-21 Points

Work contains structural weaknesses and grammatical errors.

 Grammar, spelling, word usage, punctuation and capitalization have more than a few errors.

 

20-18 Points

Work pays little attention to proper sentence structure.

 Grammar, spelling, word usage, punctuation and capitalization have many errors.
