Rockford Environmental Science Academy
In August, 1999, Rockford Environmental Science Academy
(RESA) opened on a 48 acre site in southwest Rockford. It is adjacent to
Klehm Arboretum and Botanical Center. RESA students participate in a
curriculum that incorporates an environmental science theme into the standard
district core curriculum. State-of-the-art science equipment and computer
technology allow students to acquire information from all over the world.
In addition, our greenhouse and Earth Center provide areas for hands-on study
and experiments.
Any student in the Rockford School District is eligible to attend RESA and our
students come from all sections of the city. We are proud of our diverse
population which reflects the ethnic and cultural heritage of Rockford.
The school houses three teams each of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.
Each team of 125-150 students operates as a unit
within the school. The core teachers on each team plan together and
deliver instruction in Science, Math, Social Studies, English, and
Language Arts. Many
activities are interdisciplinary.
As a supplement to their five core classes, RESA students participate in
the following Encore Classes: Environmental Sciences, Physical Education and Health. There is limited
opportunity for students to opt to take band and art.
