Baby Bobwhite Quail
RESA Students Learn Respect For Wildlife
For the past few years, some of the ecosystems classes have raised baby Bobwhite quail. Each time, RESA students and staff eagerly followed their progress. Students numbered and waited for eggs to hatch in our incubator. This little fellow, named "Skipper," was the first to appear. He was just a few hours old in this photo. Of the 100 eggs that were ordered the first year, 26 hatched and 14 quail actually survived.
Next, our 14 babies moved into a larger pen which the students helped build for them. Students fed and cared for them as they grew. Finally, the quail were released in the spring when the warmer weather and more available food helped them survive in the school fields or at the arboretum nearby.
