Bird Sanctuary: 2000 Learn and Serve Project

Seventh graders participated in an exciting Learn and Serve project in their Ecology classes during the spring of 2000.  Guest speakers brought birds to RESA and taught the students more about bird habitat.

A landscape architect demonstrated and explained how gardens are planned. Students followed up by creating their own plans for a RESA Bird Sanctuary.  As the weather got warmer, work moved outside to make their plans a reality.

A path was started and holes dug for two small ponds. Other crew members created concrete stones. In the next phase, plants that provide food and shelter for the birds will be placed in the garden.

Even before the RESA garden was complete, our students began building a smaller replica garden for Motherhouse as a community service project.  Trees were trimmed, flower gardens were planted and play areas for the children at Motherhouse were created. The RESA students worked diligently and can be proud of their accomplishments both at school and in the community.

We all looked forward to the time native birds would begin visiting our sanctuary. If you would like to know more about birds, click on National Audubon Society to find out more.

What Does It Look Like Now?

When we returned to school in September, 2001, the bird sanctuary had changed! The plants had grown and matured. Some are now taller than the students! Thanks to our students' and staff's hard work, the birds can find both cover and food in this garden.
