Civil War Camp
Each year, Mr. Marten's eighth grade American History students learn first-hand what Civil War soldiers' camps were like during that time in history. Mr. Marten sets up a tent and brings all the gear that both Union and Confederate soldiers carried. Annie, his dog, sometimes camps out too, representing the animal companions that followed their masters into war.
Mr. Marten hopes students will gain a better understanding of the hardships soldiers endured away from their homes. Each piece of equipment is explained and articles of clothing are modeled. Students learn that the sport of baseball originated from a game called "Bases" that was played in the camps.
From carrying their own water, ammunition and equipment, wearing woolen clothes in summer and cooking over campfires, the soldiers on both sides had a hard life away from home. Mr. Marten makes it come alive for his students.
