The Alternative High School at Roosevelt is one of five high school diploma granting programs for the Rockford School District, serving a diverse population of about 1500 students, ages 16 to 21. Some of its unique attributes include:

• Day care and infant care available for teen parents
• Flexible scheduling
• Open entry—open exit
• Class size limited to 15
• Individualized learning structure
• Strict attendance policy
• Support services available for students

 

Entrance requirements:

Ages: 17 to 21 (or 16 if a parent or expecting)
Credits: have earned 10 or more high school credits

Student should:
Be a self-directed learner with a recommended 8.0 reading level
Have officially dropped from their home high school
Have paid all outstanding fees at their home high school

Documents required:
Rockford School District students need a recommendation from high school counselor or principal
Out of district students must have a separation letter from their previous school.
Transfers from Illinois schools must also bring an Illinois Transfer form
Transcript
Updated physical and shot record on file

Potential students must:
Attend informational meeting with parent/guardian
Complete 3-5 day orientation procedure


Schedule:

Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:50 p.m.

Attendance Policy:


S
tudents will be allowed 3 days of absence per quarter. Absences exceeding 3 days must be all excused to avoid Attendance Violation. Excused absences include: doctor's excuse, court dates, and funerals. The 4th absence (if not excused) puts the student in Attendance Violation, which will result in the student being given a reduced schedule including Attendance Violation class and possibly being reassigned to evening classes. Students over 18 may also be referred to the GED program.

Curriculum:

Classes are offered in English, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Health, U.S. History, Government, Economics, Accounting, Business Law, Computer Applications, Personal Fitness, Reading, English Electives, Music, Parenting, Child Development, Art, Graphic Arts, Visual Arts, Music, Automotives, Machines, and Sociology.
